Longcat

Longcat is a compact puzzle game where you guide a stretching cat through small maze-like boards and try to cover every available space. Once the cat starts moving in a direction, its body keeps extending until it reaches a wall or its own tail. That makes planning more important than speed. I find it useful to think about where the cat will stop before making the first move, because filling an easy corner too early can block the only route into another section.

About Longcat

The objective is to fill the entire playable area with the cat’s growing body.

Movement is different from a normal grid puzzle because the cat does not stop after one square. It continues travelling until a wall or its own body blocks the path. If the tail catches up before every available space has been covered, the puzzle must be restarted.

Latest Longcat Update

The current Poki edition lists December 2025 as its latest update after a March 2024 release.

Poki’s current version now contains more than 1,900 levels, while the original official Fancade edition describes a smaller set of 50 levels. This means the browser release has expanded far beyond the original Fancade collection.

Longcat Gameplay

Each level gives you a small board containing open areas and obstacles.

Choose a direction and the cat stretches until something stops it. The challenge is arranging those long movements so every empty space is eventually covered.

I find it easier to identify narrow corridors first. Those areas often have fewer possible entry directions, so leaving them until the end can create an unsolvable board.

Controls

  • WASD: Move
  • Arrow Keys: Alternative movement
  • Click and Drag: Choose a direction
  • Touchscreen: Swipe or drag on supported mobile devices

These controls are confirmed by the current Poki version.

The W3C Pointer Events specification provides useful technical background on how modern browser games can support mouse and touchscreen input through the same interaction system.

Longcat Movement System

Longcat keeps moving until reaching either a wall or its own body.

That single rule is what creates most of the puzzle difficulty. You cannot simply stop halfway through a corridor to correct a mistake.

A direction that looks useful immediately may leave the cat facing an area that can no longer be reached later.

Filling Every Space

A level is complete only when the cat covers every available space.

This means reaching a large portion of the board is not enough. One isolated square can ruin an otherwise successful route.

The most useful approach is thinking about how the final few spaces will be reached before committing to the early moves.

Longcat Tail

Your own tail becomes part of the maze.

As the cat grows, previously travelled spaces are no longer freely available. This gradually reduces your movement options and makes the later part of each puzzle more restrictive.

For another puzzle where earlier decisions affect what remains available later, Mahjong Firefly uses matching tiles instead of a growing cat.

Longcat Levels

The current Poki edition contains 1,900+ levels.

The original official Fancade release contains 50 levels, so the newer browser edition substantially expands the amount of puzzle content.

Later puzzles rely on more complicated walls, gaps and narrow routes, making route planning increasingly important.

Longcat Puzzle Strategy

Look for spaces that have only one practical entrance.

Those sections are often better handled earlier because broad open areas usually give you more flexibility later.

I also avoid making a move simply because it fills many squares. A shorter move that preserves access to another corridor can be much more valuable.

Longcat Restart System

Getting stuck means restarting the current level.

Because stages are short, retries happen quickly. That makes experimenting with alternative routes part of the normal puzzle-solving process rather than a major setback.

Who Created Longcat?

Longcat was created by Martin Magni and released through Fancade.

The official Fancade Longcat page directly credits Martin Magni as the creator. Poki lists Fancade as the developer of its expanded browser version.

Martin Magni is also closely associated with several other Fancade projects, including Drive Mad and Recoil.

App And Platforms

The browser edition supports:

  • Desktop
  • Phone
  • Tablet

There is also an official Longcat – Cat Puzzles app for iPhone and iPad. Apple’s listing shows that the mobile version supports offline play and has continued receiving updates through December 2025.

Games Like Longcat

The closest alternatives are puzzle games built around movement rules and filling space efficiently.

Other Fancade titles such as Recoil, Gobble and Odd Bot Out use similarly compact levels built around one central mechanic.

For another browser puzzle where board planning matters, Mahjong Firefly uses matching and tile availability.

About This Game

Longcat works best for players who enjoy small puzzles where one simple movement rule creates many possible mistakes.

Its strongest feature is the growing body. Every move solves part of the board while simultaneously becoming a new obstacle, so progress and restriction happen at the same time.
