Master Checkers

Master Checkers is a digital version of classic checkers where you move pieces diagonally, capture opposing pieces by jumping over them, and try to reach the opposite side of the board to create kings. You can play against the computer or challenge another person on the same device. I find protecting pieces near the back row useful early on because opening that area too quickly can give the opponent an easier route to promotion.

About Master Checkers

Master Checkers brings the traditional checkers board into a simple browser format.

You move pieces diagonally across the board and capture opposing pieces by jumping over them. Reaching the far side promotes a piece to a king, giving it greater movement possibilities.

Latest Master Checkers Update

The current Poki edition lists March 2019 as its release date and December 2025 as its latest update.

As of September 2026, the English listing shows a 4.2 rating from more than 288,000 votes and confirms support for desktop, phone and tablet.

Master Checkers Gameplay

Each player starts with pieces arranged on the dark squares of the board.

Players take turns moving one piece diagonally. When an opposing piece can be jumped, it can be captured and removed from play.

Controls

  • Mouse Click: Select a piece
  • Second Click: Choose the destination square
  • Touchscreen: Tap a piece and then its destination

The browser edition lists mouse input as its main desktop control.

The W3C Pointer Events specification provides useful technical background on mouse and touchscreen interaction in modern browser games.

Master Checkers Captures

Capturing is one of the most important parts of the game.

When one of your pieces can jump diagonally over an opponent’s piece into an empty square, that opposing piece is removed.

I find it useful to check what happens immediately after a capture. Taking one piece can sometimes leave your own piece exposed to a counter-capture.

Master Checkers Kings

A normal checker becomes a king after reaching the opponent’s back row.

Kings are more flexible because they are no longer limited in the same directional way as ordinary pieces.

That makes promotion a major strategic objective, not just an extra visual reward.

Playing Against The Computer

Master Checkers includes a computer-controlled opponent.

This mode is useful for practicing basic movement, captures and king promotion without needing another player.

I would concentrate first on avoiding unnecessary piece losses rather than trying to force a quick win.

Local Two-Player Mode

You can also play against another person on the same device.

Poki specifically notes that Master Checkers supports challenging a friend on one machine.

This gives the game more replay value than a purely single-player board game.

Master Checkers Strategy

Try to keep your pieces connected.

A lone checker is often easier to trap, while two or three nearby pieces can protect one another and make captures harder for the opponent.

I also find it useful to avoid rushing every piece toward the opposite side. Sometimes controlling the center creates better opportunities than chasing an early king.

For another board-based challenge where planning future moves matters, Mahjong Firefly uses tile availability instead of diagonal movement.

Controlling The Center

Central squares usually give your pieces more movement options.

A checker stuck near an edge has fewer possible directions, while a centrally placed piece can often influence more of the board.

That makes center control a useful long-term idea even in short matches.

Protecting The Back Row

Keeping one or two pieces near the back row can slow an opponent’s attempt to create a king.

Moving every piece forward too quickly can leave the promotion line open.

I find it useful to release those defensive pieces only when there is a clear reason to do so.

Master Checkers Progression

Master Checkers does not use character upgrades, coins or a campaign tree.

Progress mainly comes from improving at:

  • Capturing safely
  • Protecting pieces
  • Controlling the center
  • Creating kings
  • Avoiding traps
  • Planning several moves ahead

That keeps the experience close to traditional checkers.
