Tag

Tag is a local multiplayer platform game where two to four players share the same device and compete in a fast version of the classic playground chase. One player is marked as “it” and must touch somebody else before the timer reaches zero. The moment another player is tagged, the roles switch instantly. I find changing direction near platforms much more effective than simply running in a straight line, because the chaser has less time to predict where you will go next.

About Tag

Tag turns the familiar playground game into a compact browser competition.

One player begins as the chaser, identified by an arrow above their character. Their job is to touch another player before time expires. Once that happens, the tagged player immediately becomes the new chaser.

The player who is still “it” when the timer reaches zero loses the round.

Latest Tag Update

The current Poki listing gives April 2023 as both the platform release date and latest update.

As of September 2026, the page shows a 4.4 rating from more than 359,000 votes and identifies WeLoPlay as the current developer.

Tag Gameplay

Tag does not use a complicated scoring or combat system.

The basic loop is:

Run → Avoid the chaser → Get tagged or escape → Roles switch → Survive until time expires

Players can jump around platforms, change direction quickly and use special parts of the map to escape.

Controls

Each player has a separate set of keyboard controls:

  • Player 1: W, A, D
  • Player 2: Up, Left and Right Arrow Keys
  • Player 3: I, J, L
  • Player 4: T, F, H

The control layout allows all four players to share one keyboard.

The MDN KeyboardEvent documentation provides useful technical background on how browser games recognize keyboard input.

Who Is “It”?

One player always acts as the chaser.

A visible arrow above that character makes it easy to see who currently needs to tag somebody else.

Once the chaser touches another player, the arrow transfers immediately.

That rapid role switching is what keeps the round unpredictable.

Tag Round Timer

You can choose between three round lengths:

  • 60 seconds
  • 120 seconds
  • 180 seconds

Shorter rounds feel more frantic, while longer rounds provide more time to use the map and set up escapes.

No matter which option you choose, the person marked as “it” when the clock reaches zero loses.

Tag Maps

Tag currently includes three maps.

They use different themes:

  • Grassy standard map
  • Winter Christmas map
  • Sandy Egypt map

Each arena contains raised platforms and routes that can be used to create distance from the chaser.

Bounce Pads

Bounce pads launch characters into the air.

They can help you cross part of the arena quickly or create distance when the chaser is close behind.

I find them most useful when you already know where the landing area leads. Jumping without checking the next platform can leave you in an easier position to tag.

Teleporters

The maps also contain glowing teleporters.

These can suddenly move a player to another position, making them useful for escaping or changing the direction of a chase.

Some versions describe the teleporter as disappearing after use, so timing it well can completely change the final moments of a round.

Tag Multiplayer

Tag is specifically designed for local multiplayer.

You need at least two players, and up to four can join using the same keyboard. The current Poki instructions state that the game is not designed as a solo experience.

That makes it especially suitable for short same-device matches rather than long online sessions.

Tag Strategy

Keep moving whenever the chaser is nearby.

Standing still makes your route easy to predict, while sharp changes in direction force the other player to react.

It also helps to watch the other runners. Avoiding the chaser is important, but running directly into another player can block your escape route.

Poki’s current tips specifically recommend constant movement, sudden direction changes, watching other players and making good use of bounce pads and teleporters.

Using Platforms

Platforms create opportunities to change height quickly.

Instead of staying on the same horizontal path for the entire chase, move between upper and lower areas when possible.

I find turning just after landing especially useful because the player following you may continue moving in the original direction.

For another physics-focused local multiplayer challenge, Get On Top uses balance rather than chasing.

Tag 2

Tag 2 is the follow-up to Tag.

It expands the original formula with bomb-style elimination, portals, bounce pads, unlockable runners, daily quests and a Zombie mode. It also supports local play and solo competition against other players.

Tag 2 was released on Poki in October 2023.

Who Created Tag?

Tag was created by WeLoPlay.

The current Poki page also credits WeLoPlay with games such as:

  • Wall Jumper
  • Stickman Bike

Older versions of Poki’s listing previously displayed JetGames as the developer, but the current page identifies WeLoPlay.

Browser And Platforms

The current Poki metadata lists desktop as the supported device for Tag.

That fits the local multiplayer design because up to four people use different sections of the same keyboard.

  • Wall Jumper
  • Stickman Bike

For another colourful multiplayer-style browser challenge, Blumgi Paintball uses platform arenas and team objectives.

Get On Top is another good fit when you want a short same-device physics competition.

About This Game

Tag works because everyone understands the objective almost immediately.

One player chases, everyone else escapes, and touching another character instantly reverses the roles. The three maps, bounce pads, teleporters and adjustable round lengths give that simple rule enough variety for repeated matches.

Its four-player keyboard setup is also a major part of the appeal because several people can join without learning complicated controls.

Get The Game

Tag runs directly in a supported desktop browser and is designed for two to four players sharing one keyboard.

Choose the number of players, select one of the three maps, set the round duration and keep moving until the timer expires. Use platforms, bounce pads and teleporters to make your route harder for the chaser to predict.
