About Gradient Banding Test

Find color banding and harsh steps in smooth gradients, and check 8 bit vs 10 bit color quality.

Banding is when a smooth gradient, like a sunset or a dark sky, shows visible steps or stripes instead of a seamless blend. It happens when a screen, a video stream or the image processing does not have enough color depth, or when settings like heavy noise reduction or wrong gamma squeeze the tones together. A gradient banding test shows smooth ramps in gray and color so you can see the steps clearly.

How To Spot Banding

Open a gray gradient and then red, green and blue ramps. Look for clear lines or bands where the tone jumps. Pay special attention to dark ramps, since banding is most visible in shadows. Some dithering noise is normal and actually helps hide steps.

8 Bit, 10 Bit And Banding

An 8 bit panel shows 256 steps per color, while 10 bit shows 1024, which makes gradients smoother, especially in HDR. Many monitors use 8 bit plus FRC to fake extra steps. If you see banding only in one app, the problem is the content or compression, not your screen.

Reducing Banding

  • Set the GPU output to the highest bit depth the screen supports.
  • Turn off aggressive noise reduction and dynamic contrast.
  • Use full range RGB on PC monitors.

Which App The Install Button Opens

The button opens a related app, Touch Screen Test & Fix Pixels on Google Play, which includes gradient and shades tests for spotting banding. Check gray steps too with our Greyscale Test.

Key Features

  • Smooth gray and RGB gradient ramps
  • Shades test for dark tone banding
  • Helps compare 8 bit and 10 bit output

Our Take On Gradient Banding Test

What We Like

  • Makes banding easy to see
  • Helps separate screen issues from stream compression
  • Free to use

What Could Be Better

  • Cannot report the true bit depth of a panel
  • Very high density phone screens hide small steps

Download Safety

  • Official source You get it from the developer's own website.

Questions People Ask About Gradient Banding Test

01 What causes color banding on a screen?

Limited color depth, heavy processing, wrong gamma or compressed video can turn smooth gradients into visible steps.

02 Does 10 bit remove banding?

It greatly reduces it, especially in HDR, but poor content or compression can still show bands.

03 Is banding a defect?

Mild banding in dark gradients is common. Strong steps in every gradient point to settings or a low quality panel.

04 Is Gradient Banding Test free to download?

Yes. Gradient Banding Test is free to download and install.

05 Is it safe to install Gradient Banding Test from here?

Yes. The button takes you to the developer's own download link, so nothing is changed or repacked on the way.
