About PWM Flicker Test

Use your camera to measure PWM flicker frequency on screens and lamps that may cause eye strain.

Many OLED phones and some monitors dim the screen with PWM, pulse width modulation, which switches the light on and off very fast. Most people never notice, but sensitive users can get eye strain, headaches or tired eyes, especially at low brightness. A PWM flicker test measures the flicker frequency so you can compare devices and find comfortable settings.

How The Test Works

Point your phone camera at the screen or lamp you want to check and hold still for two seconds. For screens, show a plain white page and lower its brightness, because most screens flicker only when dimmed. The app reports the flicker frequency with an error range and tells you when the result is borderline.

Low Vs High Frequency PWM

  • Low frequency: around 240Hz to 500Hz, more likely to bother sensitive eyes.
  • High frequency: 1920Hz and above, generally more comfortable.
  • DC dimming: lowers current instead of pulsing, reducing flicker.

Which App The Install Button Opens

The button opens PWM Flicker Test: FlickerGauge on Google Play, which measures the flicker of screens and lights with a phone camera that supports manual exposure. It makes no medical claim. Check refresh behavior too with our Refresh Rate Test (Hz).
