About Impossible Tic Tac Toe

Impossible Tic-Tac-Toe keeps the standard rules of the classic game.

Poki lists December 20, 2019 as the browser release date and June 2022 as the latest update.

Impossible Tic Tac Toe Gameplay

Each round begins with an empty nine-square board.

Choose an available square to place an X. The computer then responds with an O, and the turns continue until somebody completes a row of three or the board fills.

The 3×3 Board

There is also a mathematical reason this idea works. Standard 3×3 Tic-Tac-Toe is a solved game. When both sides play correctly, a draw can always be achieved.

That means a computer that consistently follows strong play does not need spectacular moves. It mainly needs to avoid giving you a winning opportunity.

Playing For A Draw

Against a strong Tic-Tac-Toe opponent, preventing a loss becomes just as important as creating your own line.

I find checking the computer’s possible three-in-a-row before thinking about my next attack much more reliable. One missed square can decide the round immediately.

A draw therefore feels like meaningful progress in Impossible Tic-Tac-Toe.

Rows, Columns And Diagonals

Every move can affect several winning lines at once.

The center square is especially important because it belongs to:

Archived app information lists version 1.0 from March 2016 and describes the same central concept: standard Tic-Tac-Toe against a computer designed to make strong counter-moves. That Android edition was later removed from Google Play.

The Poki browser version arrived later in December 2019.
