About MicroG Companion Node
A free, open source replacement for Google Play Services, with a Companion as a Play Store stand-in.
microG is a free and open source replacement for Google Play Services, and the Companion fills the Play Store role in a full setup. It is meant for custom Android systems where Google’s own services are absent. It is a system-level component, so it deserves more care than an ordinary app.
microG Fills In For Services A Custom ROM Does Not Ship
Many apps call Google APIs for maps, location, and push messages. On AOSP-based ROMs such as LineageOS those calls fail. The microG GmsCore wiki says it re-creates those interfaces so such apps can run. It includes the UnifiedNlp module for network-based location, and it names microG Companion as an example of a Play Store replacement. Wikipedia credits German developer Marvin Wissfeld as maintainer and lists the Apache 2.0 license.
The Companion and GmsCore are separate pieces. GmsCore reimplements the services apps expect to find, while the Companion stands in for the Play Store itself. The wiki treats the Companion as an example, which means other Play Store replacements could fill the same slot.
Signature Spoofing Is The Gatekeeper
GmsCore has to pose as the official Play Services, which means your system must allow signature spoofing. Some ROMs ship with it, and the wiki links a page for others. LineageOS developers declined to integrate microG partly over this security concern. Letting any app impersonate another is a real trade-off, so do not enable it on a phone you are unsure about.
The project began as NOGAPPS in 2012 and took the microG name by 2016, according to Wikipedia. It is more than a decade old and has a long public history, which gives you a lot to read before you decide. Reading it is wiser than relying on a short summary.
Reviewers Have Reported Four Kinds Of Friction
- Apps closely tied to Google services were less reliable
- Google Maps could not be run in one review
- Logging in to a Google account failed in another
- One 2018 review called it incomplete and still in development
DivestOS considers installing it unsupported. These notes may have changed since they were written, so test on a spare device first.
Install Only From The Project’s Own Channels
Because microG sits at the core of the system, a fake copy would be dangerous. Use the official GitHub project at github.com/microg/GmsCore and the downloads it points to, or a ROM that bundles it. Skip files labeled microG on APK sites. If your phone already has Google Play and Play Services working, you gain little by replacing them, and the official store remains the simpler path.
The wiki also links a Problem Apps page, and it asks users not to bother third-party app developers with issues that may come from microG. If an app fails on your device, check the microG docs first. Developers did not build their apps against this replacement and are unlikely to support it.
