If you are stuck, use the third direction (Right in this example). Avoid the fourth direction (Up) unless nothing else works, because it can pull your big cupcake out of the corner and let a small one take its place.

Count empty squares. When fewer than three are left, stop chasing big merges and make moves that create space, even small ones.
