Idle Breakout
Idle Breakout is an incremental brick-breaking game from Kodiqi where you click numbered blocks, earn money and buy automatic balls with different powers and abilities. Upgrade ball speed and strength, improve click damage, reach tougher levels and build an increasingly powerful automated brick-breaking setup.
Idle Breakout
Idle Breakout is an incremental brick-breaking game from Kodiqi that turns the classic Breakout idea into an idle progression system. You begin by clicking numbered bricks yourself, then use the money earned to buy balls that automatically continue breaking blocks. Different ball types have their own speed, power and special effects, so the game gradually becomes more about upgrades than constant clicking. I find investing in a few useful ball types early more effective than spreading every upgrade across everything at once.

About Idle Breakout
Idle Breakout takes inspiration from traditional brick-breaking games but removes the need to control a paddle.
At the beginning, you click numbered bricks to reduce their value to zero. Breaking them earns money, which can then be spent on automatic balls and upgrades. Once enough balls are active, much of the game continues without constant manual input.
Latest Idle Breakout Update
The current Poki edition lists June 2023 as both its release month and latest update on that platform. It currently carries a 4.4 rating from more than 46,000 votes.
The original Kodiqi version is older. Kongregate records a January 23, 2019 release, while the official itch.io development log shows updates through June 2019 for the original HTML5 and Windows builds.
Idle Breakout Gameplay
You start with manual clicking.
Each brick displays a number representing how much damage it needs before disappearing. Clicking reduces that number, and cleared bricks provide money.
As your income grows, you can purchase balls that bounce around the screen and automatically damage bricks.
Controls
- Mouse Click: Damage bricks manually
- Mouse Click: Purchase balls
- Mouse Click: Buy upgrades
- Touch: Equivalent interaction on supported phones and tablets
These are the controls listed for the current Poki browser edition.
The W3C Pointer Events specification provides useful background on how browser interfaces can support both mouse and touchscreen input.
Idle Breakout Balls
Balls are the main automation system.
Each purchased ball moves around the board and damages bricks without requiring you to click each one manually. Kodiqi’s official description says the game includes multiple ball types with different strength, speed and special abilities.
That means choosing which balls to improve becomes increasingly important as brick health rises.
Basic Ball
The Basic Ball provides straightforward automatic damage.
It does not rely on a complicated special effect, which makes it useful for building steady damage early in a run.
I find straightforward upgrades easier to judge at the beginning because you can quickly see whether the extra speed or power is improving progress.
Plasma Ball
The Plasma Ball adds splash-style damage.
Kodiqi’s development notes specifically mention fixing Plasma Ball splash damage in an early update, confirming that its purpose is damaging more than one nearby brick.
That can make it useful when many bricks remain close together.
Sniper Ball
The Sniper Ball is another specialized option.
Rather than behaving exactly like a basic bouncing ball, it targets bricks more deliberately. Historical developer discussion also references Sniper Ball behavior and targeting.
Different ball types therefore suit different parts of the board rather than simply acting as cosmetic variants.
Poison Ball
The current Poki description highlights Poison Balls as one of the available special types.
Poison effects can increase damage against affected bricks, giving you another way to improve automatic clearing speed.
Ball Upgrades
Balls can be improved after purchase.
The official itch.io page specifically mentions upgrading balls to reach higher levels and unlock additional power-ups.
The most useful upgrades depend on what is slowing your current progression. Sometimes more power helps, while faster movement can be more valuable in another situation.
Click Power
Manual clicking remains useful even after automation begins.
Poki specifically mentions upgrades that increase the power of your clicks.
This means active play can still speed up progress rather than becoming completely irrelevant once several balls are running.
Black Bricks
Higher levels introduce tougher bricks.
Kodiqi’s official development log states that Black Bricks appear after level 100 and become more common while their health grows as you progress.
That gives later stages a stronger progression curve than simply repeating the same early bricks with larger numbers.
Maximum Ball Count
Idle Breakout limits how many balls can be active.
An official developer update states that the maximum originally begins at 50 balls and can be increased using Gold through the prestige system.
This prevents progression from being based only on endlessly buying more objects.
Boss Bricks
Later versions added special boss content.
Kodiqi’s March 2019 development update notes that Boss Bricks became fully active and that defeating bosses provides Skill Points. The Skills menu unlocks around level 75 or after the first boss-related progression requirement.
This adds larger objectives beyond clearing ordinary numbered brick layouts.
Idle Breakout Skills
Skill Points provide another progression layer.
Boss rewards can be invested into longer-term improvements, giving later play more structure than simply increasing ball damage.
I would treat these permanent-style improvements as more valuable than judging progress only by the current board.
Idle Breakout Strategy
Do not spend every new amount of money immediately.
Compare whether another ball or an upgrade to an existing ball gives better value. Once several balls are active, upgrading the strongest performers can sometimes improve clearing speed more than adding another weak ball.
I also find manual clicking most useful on unusually durable bricks rather than clicking everywhere without a clear target.
For another browser puzzle where planning upgrades is replaced by board decisions, Mahjong Firefly uses tile matching instead of incremental automation.
Idle Breakout Progression
Progress mainly comes from:
- Breaking bricks
- Earning money
- Buying automatic balls
- Improving ball power and speed
- Increasing click strength
- Reaching higher levels
- Encountering tougher bricks
- Unlocking power-ups
- Facing boss content
- Improving long-term skills
The game gradually shifts from active clicking toward automated progression.
Who Created Idle Breakout?
Idle Breakout was created by Kodiqi.
The official Idle Breakout itch.io page lists Kodiqi as the author and describes the game as an idle version of classic Breakout using multiple balls with different strength, speed and abilities.
The original project was made with GameMaker and released for HTML5 and Windows.
Browser And Platforms
The current Poki edition supports:
- Desktop
- Phone
- Tablet
Kodiqi’s original itch.io release also provides HTML5 and Windows versions.
Games Like Idle Breakout
Idle Breakout is a good fit for players who enjoy:
- Incremental games
- Idle games
- Brick-breaking games
- Upgrade systems
- Clicker games
- Long-term progression
Its unusual feature is combining traditional brick destruction with automation rather than requiring continuous paddle control.
For a completely different browser challenge, Get On Top uses short physics-based matches instead of idle progression.
About This Game
Idle Breakout works because progress remains visible almost all the time.
At first, you manually click individual bricks. Later, several balls move around automatically while upgrades, tougher blocks and boss mechanics give you new goals.
The basic controls remain simple even when the underlying progression becomes much larger.
