Description

Snake is a classic arcade game built around one simple challenge: guide a growing snake around the board, collect food, and stay away from the walls and your own body. The idea is easy to understand in seconds, but every piece of food reduces the amount of safe space left on the board. This browser version keeps that familiar loop while adding adjustable speeds, bonuses, different snakes, and leaderboard-style score chasing.

About Snake

Snake looks simple because there are very few rules between starting a round and losing one. Collecting food makes the snake longer, while touching the edge of the board or your own body ends the run.

That simplicity is a major part of its history. Snake became closely associated with Nokia phones in the late 1990s. HMD’s history of the Snake game notes that the Nokia 6110 brought Snake to mobile phones in 1997.

Snake Gameplay

You begin with a short snake and plenty of empty space. Each food item makes your body longer and raises your score, but it also makes turning around safely more difficult.

The important lesson is not simply to chase the nearest food. A move that looks safe with a short snake can trap you later once your body fills more of the board. Leaving yourself room to turn is usually more valuable than reaching food one second faster.

Controls

Use the Arrow Keys to change direction on desktop.

Mobile versions can use touch-based controls depending on the device. The main rule remains the same: plan the next turn before the snake reaches a wall or its own tail.

Snake Food, Bonuses And Features

Food is the main object you collect. Each pickup increases the snake’s length and gradually makes the board harder to navigate.

This version also includes different speeds, bonuses and snake variations. Faster settings can make scoring more demanding because there is less time to correct a poor turn.

That growing difficulty is also part of the traditional Snake design. HMD describes the classic formula as eating items to grow longer while control becomes increasingly difficult as the snake expands. Read HMD’s overview of the classic Snake mechanics

Snake Score And Progression

Snake does not rely on a long story or mission system. Progress is measured mainly through survival time, snake length and score.

A common mistake is filling the middle of the board too early. Keeping longer paths open around the edges can give you more choices later, especially once the snake becomes large enough to block its own routes.

The scoring format is one reason Snake works well for short sessions. A failed round can be restarted immediately, so improving a previous score becomes the main long-term goal.

Who Created Snake?

This browser version of Snake was created by Coolgames B.V.

The wider Snake concept is much older than this edition. According to Guinness World Records, Snake became enormously popular after appearing on Nokia mobile phones and was estimated to have been played by more than one billion people.

Platforms

This version supports desktop computers, phones and tablets.

Snake also continues to appear on modern feature phones. For example, HMD still includes an updated version of the classic game on devices such as the Nokia 3310, showing how long the basic gameplay has remained recognizable.

Games Like Snake

Players who enjoy Snake may also like arcade and skill games where a simple control system gradually becomes harder as the score increases.

The closest alternatives usually involve collecting objects, navigating increasingly crowded spaces, avoiding collisions, or trying to improve a personal high score rather than completing a long campaign.

About This Game

Snake is a good example of a game where difficulty comes from your own success. Growing longer is the goal, but every successful pickup also removes some of the space you will need later.

That creates a useful balance between quick reactions and planning. New players can understand the objective immediately, while experienced players can focus on route management, efficient turns and keeping enough open space for the late part of a run.
