Hunting games had been a Glu staple since the company bought the Deer Hunter franchise in April 2012, and this free-to-play entry became the biggest of them. It arrived on iOS in September 2013, where it reached the top of the free games chart in the US App Store within days, and Glu brought it to Android shortly afterwards. Later on, the same app changed its name to Deer Hunter Classic.

Why Deer Hunter 2014 Became Deer Hunter Classic

The rename happened in update 3.2. Glu kept the game, the saves and the Android package name, com.glu.deerhunt2, and only changed the title. Glu did not publish an explanation. The likely reason is simple enough, since Glu went on to release yearly follow-ups such as Deer Hunter 2016 and Deer Hunter 2018, and a game named after 2014 would have looked out of date beside them. If you see Deer Hunter Classic in old store screenshots or app lists, it is the same game that launched as Deer Hunter 2014.

What Is Deer Hunter 2014

It is a first-person hunting simulator built for short sessions. Each hunt drops you into a region, gives you a target animal and asks for a clean shot through the scope before the animal spots you and bolts. Rewards from successful hunts pay for better rifles and for customising the ones you already own, which in turn opens harder targets further away. The game needs a network connection, shows ads and offers optional purchases, and its age rating marked it as not intended for children.

The scope of the game was its main selling point. Hunts took you from the forests of North America’s Pacific Northwest to the savannah of Central Africa, with more than 100 species spread across those regions. Deer were only the start:

• Predators such as bears, wolves and cheetahs, which could turn the hunt around if you missed

Club hunts let groups of players take part in shared hunts, and trophies, achievements and leaderboards gave the competitive side something to chase.

Deer Hunter 2014 Reached Phones, Fire TV And Facebook

Glu pushed the game well beyond phones. A version for Amazon Fire TV took it to televisions, and a Facebook edition brought it to web browsers. That spread, along with the chart success on iOS, is part of why so many people still recognise the name. Glu also licensed the Deer Hunter brand to GameMill for a console game, which shows how valuable the franchise had become to the company.

Is Deer Hunter 2014 Still On Google Play?

It does not appear to be. The Google Play page for com.glu.deerhunt2 no longer loads as a live listing, and the iOS version stopped receiving updates in December 2018 at version 3.15.0. Glu itself was acquired by Electronic Arts in 2021, and much of its older catalogue has since disappeared from stores. Because the game depended on online services, an old installation file is not a dependable way back in, and builds from that period were not made for current 64-bit-only phones.

How It Compares To The Later Deer Hunter Games

Deer Hunter 2016 and Deer Hunter 2018 kept the same basic loop of scoped shots and weapon upgrades, while adding more regions and events. Players who stayed loyal to the 2014 version often said they preferred its simpler structure and the wider spread of animals it already had at launch. Earlier Glu titles such as Deer Hunter Reloaded, which introduced an X-ray mode in 2012, are part of the same lineage, so the 2014 game sits in the middle of a long series rather than at its start.
