About Blood & Glory
Glu's swipe-to-fight gladiator game set in Roman arenas, often called Infinity Blade for Android
Ancient Rome, a lot of blood and a swipe-based sword system were the ingredients Glu Mobile used for this free 2011 fighting game. When it landed on the Android Market in November 2011, Android Police described it as Infinity Blade for Android, and that comparison followed the game for the rest of its life, since Epic’s swipe fighter was iOS-only at the time.
What Is Blood & Glory
You play a gladiator fighting through a series of arena tournaments against heavily armoured opponents. Each bout is one-on-one, seen from close behind your fighter, and the goal is simple enough to explain: wear the other fighter down before he does the same to you. Between bouts you spend winnings on better weapons and armour. Glu also released a separate unrated version with even more violence, which tells you how much the game leaned into its blood splatter.
How Swipe Combat Works In Blood & Glory
Attacks come from swiping across the screen in different directions, and defence comes from blocking and dodging. Parries are the part that rewards practice, because they work best when you match both the timing and the angle of an incoming strike. Special attacks and combos give you bursts of extra damage, and when blood lands on the screen you can wipe it away with a finger, a small touch that people mentioned in nearly every early review. The tutorial covers these moves at the start, and the controls were widely described as responsive, which made fights feel quick.
Upgrades And The Wall Players Hit
The game was free, with in-app purchases for currency. Weapon upgrades were the main thing you bought, and the problem appeared once the tournaments grew harder. Trusted Reviews found that certain enemies were nearly impossible to beat without paying for upgrades, and commenters at the time noticed that rewards dropped sharply when you replayed old battles to grind. Blood & Glory looked and felt excellent in its first hours, yet its later fights depended heavily on how much you were willing to spend.
Blood & Glory On 2011 Android Hardware
Its visuals and physics were a showcase for phones of the time. On some devices, though, it simply would not install, and owners of the original Galaxy S were among those reporting trouble. One commenter suggested that the game was larger than the space that phone set aside for apps. Glu released updates over time, and the last known builds reached version 1.1.6, yet none of them were made with today’s 64-bit-only phones in mind.
Glu’s Gladiator Series After The First Game
The original was successful enough to spawn two follow-ups:
- Blood & Glory: Legend, which added more story and a wider range of enemies and weapons
- Blood & Glory: Immortals, a later entry with a new campaign
Each one kept the swipe-and-parry core, so players who liked the first game usually moved on to Legend when it arrived.
Can You Still Download Blood & Glory?
Not from Google Play. The listing under the package name com.glu.gladiator has been removed, and Glu, which Electronic Arts acquired in 2021, never gave a date or reason. No remaster exists. People who want that style of fighting today generally turn to newer swipe-based sword games, though for many Android owners in 2011 Blood & Glory was the first time a phone game looked anything like a console fighter.
