About WWE Immortals
NetherRealm's 3v3 wrestling brawler where WWE Superstars became super-powered Immortals
Wrestling fans who downloaded this game in January 2015 found something far stranger than a wrestling sim. NetherRealm Studios, working with Phosphor Game Studios, took WWE Superstars and rebuilt them as armoured, glowing, super-powered fighters, then dropped them into the three-on-three battle system from the Injustice mobile game. Warner Bros. released it free on Android and iOS on January 15, 2015.
What Was WWE Immortals
In the game each Superstar became an Immortal, a mythic version of the wrestler. The Undertaker, Kane and Brock Lesnar were among the names who received this treatment, and their entrances, signature moves and supers were exaggerated well past anything a ring could hold. You collected Immortals in bronze, silver and gold tiers, later joined by platinum, and built a team of three to fight other teams. Matches used taps for strikes, swipes for combos and a block input, with power building up for special moves and a big finishing super.
How Progression Worked In WWE Immortals
Immortal Credits paid for almost everything. They bought new characters, talent cards, booster packs and Gear cards, and they paid for upgrades. Characters could level up to 50 and reach Legendary status once you collected enough duplicates. Gear cards raised stats when equipped, and unwanted ones could be scrapped into materials that improved other cards, so even poor pulls had some use.
The modes gave that progression somewhere to go:
- Battle matches in sets, each set finished by a boss
- Weekly Challenge stages for special gold characters, at Regular, Expert and Nightmare difficulty
- Online play with Singles, Show and Main Event matches for ranking rewards
- A Ladder Event, added in version 2.5 in June 2017, which introduced platinum characters
- Zombie Invasion, a five-stage gauntlet for zombified versions of four wrestlers
WWE Immortals Reviews Were Better Than Many Expected
Critics were mostly kind. Pocket Gamer gave it 4 out of 5 and called it remarkably fun, and TouchArcade matched that score while praising the gameplay and multiplayer. GameRevolution scored it 7 out of 10, liking the wrestler designs and graphics yet criticizing short play sessions and technical faults, and the iOS version settled on 72 at Metacritic. Wrestling fans tended to split. Some loved the cartoonish armour and powers, while others wanted something that looked and felt like an actual WWE match.
Why WWE Immortals Disappeared In 2019
The end came in two steps. In-app purchases were switched off on December 31, 2018, and the game itself shut down on February 28, 2019. No official reason was published. Because WWE Immortals was an online game tied to Warner Bros. servers, it cannot be played today and has been removed from Google Play. No remaster or offline edition was ever released, and builds from that era were not made for current 64-bit-only phones.
How It Compared To Injustice And Mortal Kombat Mobile
WWE Immortals sat between NetherRealm’s two bigger phone fighters. It reused the Injustice structure almost directly, which made it easy to pick up for anyone who had played that game, and a few months later Mortal Kombat X arrived on phones with a similar format. Where Injustice had DC’s deep roster and Mortal Kombat had its own fatal style, Immortals relied on licensed wrestlers whose real-life popularity kept shifting, and that may help explain why it closed while the other two carried on.
Who Still Remembers It
Today it is mainly remembered by WWE fans who collected the platinum characters and by people curious about the odd crossover between NetherRealm and wrestling. Footage of the Immortal designs and the Zombie Invasion event is easy to find online, and it is the only way left to see the game in action.
