Cave Chaos

Cave Chaos is a fast side-scrolling platform game where you guide a small miner through an unstable cave while the route is constantly built and removed around you. It can be played solo or with a second player on the same keyboard. The biggest mistake is waiting too long for the perfect moment because the platforms behind you do not stay there forever. Moving steadily while watching what the bats build ahead usually works better.

About Cave Chaos

Cave Chaos follows a miner trying to escape through an unstable underground network.

The unusual part is that much of the route does not permanently exist. Bats assemble platforms ahead of you while older sections gradually disappear, forcing you to keep progressing instead of waiting safely in one location.

Latest Cave Chaos Version

The original Cave Chaos was released as a Flash game on October 7, 2009.

An HTML5 edition followed on September 29, 2020, allowing the game to continue running in modern browser environments after Flash support ended.

Nitrome still lists Cave Chaos within its current multiplayer game catalogue.

Cave Chaos Miner

You control a small cave miner trying to reach stable ground before the environment disappears underneath the character.

There is no complicated upgrade or equipment system. Your success depends mainly on movement, jumping and reacting to the platforms as they appear.

Cave Chaos Gameplay

Each level scrolls horizontally toward its goal.

Bats create parts of the route ahead while older sections are eventually dismantled. That means staying still for too long can leave you without a platform underneath you.

I find it more reliable to move in short, deliberate bursts. Rushing blindly makes unfamiliar platforms harder to read, while waiting too long creates a completely different problem.

Controls

Player 1

  • Left / Right Arrow: Move
  • Up Arrow: Jump

Player 2

  • A / D: Move
  • W: Jump

These controls are documented for the original Cave Chaos release.

The MDN KeyboardEvent documentation explains how modern browser games can detect keyboard input.

Cave Chaos Moving Platforms

The disappearing environment is the game’s defining mechanic.

New platforms are assembled just ahead of your character, but they eventually disappear behind you. This keeps the level moving and prevents you from relying on one permanently safe position.

The useful habit is watching the newly built terrain rather than looking only at your character.

Cave Chaos Two Player Mode

Cave Chaos supports two local players.

Both players share the same level while using separate keyboard controls. This changes the rhythm because each person needs enough space to move through the unstable route without falling behind.

For another local physics challenge, Get On Top uses balance and direct competition instead of a collapsing cave.

Cave Chaos Levels

The original Cave Chaos contains 20 levels.

The first stage introduces the basic platform-building mechanic before later levels increase the pressure with more complicated layouts and moving sections.

Because the route changes while you play, reaching the end is often more about maintaining momentum than memorising a completely static course.

Cave Chaos Gems

Collectible gems appear throughout the stages.

They give you an optional reason to move away from the safest path, but collecting every visible item is not always worth losing your position.

I usually prioritize reaching stable terrain first and collect gems when they already sit close to the route.

Cave Chaos Level Strategy

Keep moving, but avoid treating the game like a pure speed run.

Watch where new platforms appear and prepare the next jump before reaching the edge. In two-player mode, leaving enough space between both characters can also make crowded sections easier to manage.

For another game where platform timing matters, Blumgi Paintball uses competitive arenas rather than disappearing terrain.

Who Created Cave Chaos?

Cave Chaos was created by Nitrome, the London-based studio known for a large catalogue of pixel-art browser games.

Nitrome continues to list Cave Chaos in its official multiplayer games collection, alongside other local multiplayer titles.

Browser And Platforms

Cave Chaos originally ran through Adobe Flash.

The later HTML5 version arrived in September 2020, making it suitable for modern web browsers without the old Flash plugin.

The official Nitrome games catalogue continues to maintain the studio’s browser-game collection.

Cave Chaos 2

Cave Chaos received a direct sequel called Cave Chaos 2.

The sequel was released on May 17, 2012 and contains 15 levels. It keeps the collapsing-cave idea while introducing additional gameplay elements and checkpoints.

An HTML5 port of Cave Chaos 2 became available in November 2020.

Games Like Cave Chaos

The most direct follow-up is Cave Chaos 2, since it continues the same unstable-platform concept.

Nitrome’s wider multiplayer catalogue also contains games built around cooperative or competitive shared-keyboard play.

For a different type of quick multiplayer challenge, Get On Top focuses on physics and balance.

About This Game

Cave Chaos works best for players who like platform games where standing still is rarely safe.

Its strongest idea is the constantly changing environment. The controls remain simple, but the cave itself creates pressure by constructing your next route while removing the one behind you.
