About Fruit Ninja Classic

Swipe through flying fruit, dodge bombs and chase combos in Halfbrick's original Fruit Ninja

Halfbrick Studios in Brisbane, Australia, released Fruit Ninja on April 20, 2010, with Luke Muscat as lead designer. It sold over 200,000 copies on iOS in its first month, came to Android the same year, and passed one billion downloads across platforms by 2015.

What Is Fruit Ninja Classic

Fruit Ninja Classic is the name the original game carries today, separating it from Fruit Ninja 2 and the other spin-offs. Fruit is thrown up from the bottom of the screen, and you swipe your finger through it to slice it in half. Bombs are thrown up alongside the fruit, and slicing one has consequences that depend on the mode. Slicing three or more fruits in one swipe scores a combo, which is where most high scores come from.

Three Ways To Play Fruit Ninja Classic

The game has three modes, and each one changes the rules in a way that matters:

  • Classic ends the game when you drop three fruits or hit a single bomb, and it can run for a long time if you stay careful.
  • Zen removes bombs entirely and gives you a minute and a half to score as much as possible.
  • Arcade lasts 60 seconds, makes bombs cost 10 points instead of ending the round, and adds special bananas.

The Arcade bananas are Frenzy, which throws extra fruit in from the sides, Double Score, and Freeze, which slows time briefly. Saving a Freeze banana for a moment when Frenzy is active is the simplest way to push Arcade scores higher. Pomegranates appear in Classic and reward rapid repeated slicing, and an ultra-rare dragonfruit is worth 50 points.

Halfbrick Kept Adding To Fruit Ninja Classic

Arcade mode was not in the first release. It came to iOS in November 2010 and reached Android in January 2011, in the same update that added an ice blade to the Android version. Later updates brought dozens of blades, and the fifth anniversary update in 2015 added dojos that change the gameplay, such as the Cherry Blossom dojo, which halves the cost of power-ups. The current listing counts more than 40 blades.

The game spread far beyond phones too. Fruit Ninja Kinect launched on Xbox 360 in August 2011 as the first Xbox Live Arcade game to use Kinect, with your arms doing the slicing, and it won Casual Game of the Year at the Interactive Achievement Awards.

Why Some Long-Time Players Are Unhappy With Fruit Ninja Classic

Fruit Ninja Classic is live on Google Play and free to install, but it now runs on Halfbrick’s subscription model. Non-subscribers see ads and in-app purchases, while a Halfbrick+ subscription, with a one-month free trial, removes both. Recent reviews include players who say they paid for the classic game years ago and were unhappy to find ads and a subscription after the change, which partly explains its rating of about 3.2 stars. A separate listing, Fruit Ninja Classic+, exists for players who want a different arrangement.

Does Fruit Ninja Classic Feel Dated On New Phones?

The slicing still feels as good as it did in 2010, partly because modern screens track fast swipes so well. The game plays offline and installs on current Android phones without trouble. What it lacks is the steady content of Fruit Ninja 2, so players who want events and progression tend to move to the sequel, whereas those who want the original three modes with nothing extra stay here. For a first session, start in Zen to learn how fruit arcs, then move to Classic once you can spot bombs without slowing down.
