About Assassin’s Creed Identity

Build your own Assassin in Renaissance Italy in Ubisoft's 2016 mobile action RPG, now shut down.

Set in Renaissance Italy alongside the events of Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, this was Ubisoft’s attempt to put a console-style Assassin’s Creed in a phone. Ubisoft Blue Byte built Assassin’s Creed Identity in the Unity engine, soft-launched it in Australia and New Zealand in 2014, then released it worldwide on iOS on February 25, 2016 and on Android on May 18, 2016, priced at $4.99 and requiring Android 4.1 or later.

What Is Assassin’s Creed Identity

You create your own Assassin, known in the story as Lo Sparviero, and work for the Brotherhood against Cesare Borgia and the Templars. The main plot follows a group called the Crows, trained by Cesare to copy Assassin methods, and their masked leader Il Corvo, who turns out to be the weapons merchant Sirus Favero. Missions take place in Italian towns with rooftops to climb, crowds to blend into and guards who react through Anonymous, Alerted and Wanted states, much like the console games.

The Four Classes In Assassin’s Creed Identity

Character building is where Identity differs most from the main series. Each Assassin picks a primary class and later a secondary one:

  • Berserker, built for open combat
  • Shadow Blade, focused on stealth and quiet kills
  • Trickster, the all-round option
  • Thief, focused on agility and evasion

Skills, gear and outfits stack on top of the class, so two players could approach the same mission very differently. You could also own several Assassins and swap between them, which suited the game’s loot and ranking systems. Hirelings could be called in during fights to help, which made crowded brawls easier for stealth builds that were weak in open combat.

Campaign, Contracts And The Forli Campaign

Campaign missions push the story forward, while contract missions are short side jobs such as escorting a figure, tailing a target, an assassination or a courier run for experience. With the Android launch, Ubisoft also released Forli: A Crimson Sunset, a campaign set in the swampy village from Assassin’s Creed II and Brotherhood, playable at dusk or during a siege. It added four story missions, Crow Hunt contracts and new daily challenges, and cost $1.99.

How Assassin’s Creed Identity Was Received

Critics landed in the middle, with a Metacritic score of 69. Pocket Gamer gave it 4 out of 5, while Destructoid scored it 6. Reviewers were impressed by how much of the console movement and blending made it to phones, and the towns looked good for the hardware of the time. The criticism centered on repetitive missions and a grind for ranks and gear that seemed built around paid boosts, which felt out of place in a game that already charged upfront. The 2014 soft launch had been free-to-play, and some of that design stayed in the paid release.

Why Assassin’s Creed Identity Is No Longer Available

Ubisoft shut down the online services for Assassin’s Creed Identity in October 2021 and removed it from all digital storefronts two months later. There is no official replacement on Android today. Ubisoft’s later mobile entry, Assassin’s Creed Rebellion, is a squad-building strategy RPG, so Identity’s third-person, console-style approach has not returned on phones in the same form.

Who Remembers It Fondly

Players who wanted Ezio-era cities on a phone and enjoyed building different Assassins got the most from it. Anyone who missed it at the time cannot buy or reinstall it from a store now.

  • Online services shut down in October 2021 and the game was removed from stores
  • Grind and paid boosts sat awkwardly in a premium game
  • Combat could feel stiff next to the console games
