About Plants vs. Zombies

Plant sunflowers, peashooters and wall-nuts to hold your lawn against waves of zombies

George Fan designed Plants vs. Zombies at PopCap Games, and it began on PC in 2009 before spreading to almost every platform of the time. Android players first got it through the Amazon Appstore on May 31, 2011, then on Google Play that December, and a free version followed on November 13, 2014.

What Is Plants vs. Zombies

Zombies walk across your lawn from the right toward your house, one lane at a time, and you stop them by planting defences in the grid of squares in their path. Every plant costs sun. Sun falls from the sky during daytime levels, and Sunflowers produce more of it, so most levels start with a row of Sunflowers before any attackers go down. If a zombie reaches the left edge of a lane, a lawnmower clears it once, and a second zombie in that lane ends the level.

Each plant has a role. Peashooters fire straight down their lane, Wall-nuts block and soak up bites, Cherry Bombs clear an area, and Chompers swallow a zombie whole but need time to chew. The usual opening of two columns of Sunflowers, then attackers, then Wall-nuts at the front works for most of the early game.

Plants vs. Zombies Moves From The Lawn To The Roof

Adventure mode has 50 levels in five stages of ten, and each stage changes the conditions:

  1. Day on the front lawn, with sun falling freely
  2. Night, where little sun falls and mushrooms become cheap and strong
  3. The pool in the backyard, where lily pads hold plants in water lanes
  4. Fog over the pool, which hides zombies until they come close
  5. The roof, where slopes force lobbed plants such as cabbage-pults

Crazy Dave, your neighbour with a pot on his head, runs a shop where you spend coins on upgrades and extra seed slots. The last level of Adventure is a fight with Dr. Zomboss, who rides a giant robot across the roof.

Twenty-Six Zombies And How They Push Back

The zombies are as varied as the plants. Conehead and Buckethead zombies simply take more hits, Pole Vaulting zombies leap over the first plant they meet, Newspaper zombies speed up when their paper is destroyed, and Football zombies charge through weaker defences. Later stages add swimmers, divers and balloon zombies that float over the front line. With 26 zombie types against 49 plants, the game keeps introducing a new problem for several hours, and that steady pace is a large part of why players remember it so well.

Extra Modes After The Plants vs. Zombies Adventure

Finishing Adventure opens about 20 mini-games, Puzzle mode and Survival. Puzzle mode includes Vasebreaker, where you smash vases that hide plants or zombies, and I, Zombie, where you place zombies to break through set plant defences. Survival asks you to last through repeated waves with the same lawn. The Zen Garden, which opens after level 5-4, lets you grow plants you find and sell them for coins.

PopCap, EA And Plants vs. Zombies On Android Today

Electronic Arts bought PopCap in July 2011 for $750 million, and the Android version now lists ELECTRONIC ARTS as its developer. It is live on Google Play, free to install with ads and in-game purchases, and it still receives updates. PC critics gave the original a Metacritic score of 87, and it won Golden Joystick awards in 2010. A sequel, Plants vs. Zombies 2, came in 2013 with time travel worlds, and a remaster called Plants vs. Zombies: Replanted was released on October 23, 2025, though it is a separate product from this mobile edition.

The mobile version works well on phones, though the grid can feel cramped on small screens late in Survival. Reviews tend to praise how faithful it is to the original, while some players say the ads and purchase prompts take away from what was once a simple paid game.
