About ePSXe for Android

The classic PC PlayStation emulator on Android, with split-screen multiplayer and OpenGL renderers

Years before phones could handle PlayStation games, ePSXe was already a well-known emulator on Windows, created by three developers known as calb, _Demo_ and Galtor. The Android port was announced on August 30, 2012 and reached Google Play the following month, sold by the Spanish company epsxe software s.l. It still costs $3.75 today, with no ads and no free tier.

What Is ePSXe For Android

ePSXe emulates the original Sony PlayStation, the PSX or PSone, and the Android version is a port of the PC emulator. The developer claims compatibility above 99 percent of the library, and the app supports savestates, cheat codes and memory cards that work with the PC build. It runs natively on ARM chips and on Intel Atom x86 tablets. The listing is blunt about games: none are included, and they must be provided by the user.

BIOS Files And Discs Must Come From Your Own PlayStation

Early versions needed a real PlayStation BIOS image, which ePSXe has never shipped because Sony owns the copyright. Version 1.9.25 added an HLE BIOS that imitates the real one, though its compatibility is lower. For the best results, dump the BIOS from a PlayStation you own and rip your own game discs to image files. We do not link to BIOS or ROM downloads. Games load from BIN/CUE and similar images, and .ppf patch files can fix the odd stubborn title.

Two-Player Split Screen Makes ePSXe Different

One feature you rarely find elsewhere is the two-player split-screen mode on a single device, made for local multiplayer on a tablet. The app supports one to four players overall with Bluetooth or USB gamepads, and the listing names Wiimote, Sixaxis, Xbox 360, Moga and Ipega pads. Analog stick support covers DualShock games, and hardware buttons can be remapped on phones with built-in keyboards or gamepads, a feature that dates back to the Xperia Play era.

How To Get Crisp Graphics From ePSXe

  1. Try the OpenGL renderers first, since they smooth polygons and raise resolution.
  2. Switch to the 2x or 4x software renderer if a game shows glitches under OpenGL.
  3. Keep the frame limiter on so music and gameplay stay at the right speed.
  4. Use savestates freely, but keep normal memory card saves as a backup.

Is ePSXe Still Updated In 2026?

Development has always come in bursts. The PC version halted after 1.6.0 in August 2003, resumed in 2008 and paused again before returning in 2012. On Android, Wikipedia lists 2.0.15 from June 2021 as the latest numbered release, while the Play listing shows an update in July 2026, so the store build is still being maintained. It installs on current phones and keeps a 4.5 star rating from more than 50,000 reviews, with over a million downloads.

ePSXe Compared With Newer PlayStation Emulators

ePSXe set the standard for a long time, and Retro Gamer called it the best free PlayStation emulator back in 2005, when the PC version cost nothing. Newer open source projects such as DuckStation now offer extras like geometry correction, and in 2023 MakeUseOf recommended DuckStation instead. Even so, many Android players stay with ePSXe because it is simple to set up and has worked the same way for more than a decade, which suits people who just want to load a disc image and play.

Its plug-in heritage from the PC days also explains why the settings menu feels a little technical. Graphics, sound, CD-ROM and input each had their own plug-in on Windows, and the Android port keeps much of that separation, so it pays to change one setting at a time when a game misbehaves.
