About Pocket God
The island god game where you help or torment a tribe of pygmies, ported to Android by ngmoco
Bolt Creative’s island of small, unlucky pygmies first appeared on the iPhone in January 2009, and Pocket God became one of the App Store’s early hits. Its Android version came on December 1, 2010, published by ngmoco as that company’s first game outside iOS, priced at 99 cents. Windows Phone 7 and Verizon versions appeared around the same time.
What Is Pocket God
It is a god game in the loosest sense. You rule a small island and its tribe of pygmies, and your powers range from kind gifts, such as handing them a fishing rod, to disasters like hurricanes. Most players spent their time finding creative ways to fling, burn, drown or squash the islanders, then waited for them to respawn. The phone’s accelerometer controls gravity and earthquakes, so tilting and shaking the device are part of the play.
There is no score to chase and no way to lose, which surprised players used to traditional games. The fun comes from discovery: trying a new power, seeing how the pygmies react and finding the hidden combinations that trigger special animations. Each episode added more of these secrets, and players swapped tips on forums about which actions unlocked which reactions, so people kept coming back long after the first session.
Pocket God Grew Through Episodes
Bolt Creative’s update schedule became the game’s main story. Instead of selling sequels, the studio released a steady run of free episodes on iOS, each adding new islands, mini-games, powers and jokes. In December 2012 Bolt called Apocalypse Ow! the final update, explaining that constant updating had left its small team unable to make new games, and at the time it was described as the most officially updated game on iOS. A bonus episode, Call of Booty, still followed in November 2014. That episodic model, with free content arriving every few weeks, was unusual in 2009 and helped keep Pocket God near the top of the charts.
How The Android Version Compared
The Android port arrived almost two years into the iOS run, and press coverage at launch focused on the island and the pygmies rather than on which episodes it carried. It is not clear that the Android build ever matched the full iOS episode list, so players remembering certain later islands may have seen them only on iPhone. The core island, the powers and the accelerometer tricks were all part of the Android release.
Spin-Offs And The Wider Series
The pygmies spread well beyond the original app:
- Pocket God: Journey to Uranus, an episodic spin-off from December 2010
- Pocket God: Ooga Jump, a 2013 iOS platformer
- A Facebook version made with Frima Studio, closed in 2015
- A Pocket God comic book series
Is Pocket God Still On Google Play?
The ngmoco version of Pocket God is no longer listed on Google Play. The Android release has not been republished since. Old copies date from the Android 2.x period and are a poor fit for current phones, so for most Android owners the game now exists only as a memory and in gameplay videos.
Why People Still Bring It Up
Pocket God’s dark slapstick humor and its constant free updates made it a favorite among players who were children or teenagers in 2009 and 2010. Its influence shows in later sandbox games where the fun comes from experimenting on helpless little characters.
