About Infinity Blade
Epic's iOS-only Unreal Engine 3 sword duel game, never released on Google Play
Epic Games never released Infinity Blade on Google Play. The sword-fighting game from Chair Entertainment, an Epic subsidiary, launched on the iPhone and iPad on December 9, 2010, and remained an Apple exclusive for its whole life outside China. That is why there is no Android package on this page: no official global Android version ever existed, and any app claiming to be one is not from Epic.
What Is Infinity Blade
It is a one-on-one sword combat game set in a ruined castle. An unnamed knight fights oversized enemies in duels that end with the immortal God King. You swipe to attack and to parry, and tap to dodge or raise a shield. Shields only absorb a limited number of hits, and choosing the wrong counter costs health, so each fight becomes a reading game of enemy wind-ups.
How Bloodlines Work In Infinity Blade
Losing to the God King is part of the design. When the knight dies, play continues as his descendant, years later, with the same items and level, while enemies grow tougher with each cycle. Experience raises both the character and his gear, and attribute points go to health, attack, shield or magic. Using the Infinity Blade item opens a dungeon route with a fourth ending, and a New Game+ option resets gold and items while keeping your level. The bloodline loop is the heart of the game, and critics were split on whether it felt clever or repetitive.
Infinity Blade Was A Showcase For Unreal Engine 3
It was the first iOS game built on Unreal Engine 3, and Epic used it to show what phone hardware could do. Sales matched the attention. It was the fastest-grossing iOS app at launch, earning about $1.6 million in its first four days, and passed $23 million by the end of 2011. It sold for $5.99 at a time when most phone games cost a dollar or two. Four free expansions between December 2010 and October 2011 added a lot on top of the launch version:
- New enemies and equipment
- Dungeons, including the route to the fourth ending
- An Arena PvP mode and a Survival mode
- Microtransactions for gold
Metacritic lists it at 87, and it was nominated for Portable Game of the Year at the Interactive Achievement Awards.
Did Infinity Blade Ever Come To Android?
Not in any global form. The only non-Apple release was a Chinese edition for Android and Xbox One published by Tencent in November 2015, which was never sold on Google Play outside China. The two sequels, Infinity Blade II and Infinity Blade III, also stayed on iOS. Android players of that era looking for this style of game usually turned to swipe-combat games from other studios.
Epic Pulled The Trilogy In December 2018
On December 10, 2018, Epic removed Infinity Blade and both sequels from the App Store, saying it had become too difficult to keep supporting them at the standard it wanted on newer hardware. People who had already bought the games could still re-download them, though in-app purchases were switched off. The next day the Infinity Blade sword appeared in Fortnite Battle Royale, where it was pulled three days later for being too powerful and returned in February 2019 in a weaker form for a limited-time mode.
Who Should Care About It Today
For Android owners, Infinity Blade is mostly a piece of mobile history rather than something to play. It showed that a premium, console-looking game could succeed on a phone, and it influenced a wave of swipe-based combat games that did reach Android.
