About Champion Island
Google launched Champion Island on July 23, 2021. Instead of offering one short mini-game, it created a small open world where Lucky can walk between sports arenas, speak with characters, join one of four teams, and complete optional quests. Google’s official Champion Island page explains that the island contains seven sports, legendary opponents, and dozens of side quests. Google’s official Champion Island Games page

Champion Island Gameplay
You move Lucky around the island and enter different sports competitions when you reach their arenas. Winning a championship earns a sacred scroll, while talking to characters can open smaller side quests.
A practical mistake is rushing directly from one sport to another. Some of the most useful parts of Champion Island are found by speaking with characters and checking areas away from the main path.
Controls
Directional keys are used to move Lucky around the island.
The action control is used for interacting and performing sport-specific moves. Controls change slightly between mini-games because archery, rugby, climbing, and table tennis require different timing.
Champion Island Sports And Champions
There are seven main sports:
- Table Tennis against Tengu
- Skateboarding against Tanuki
- Archery against Yoichi
- Rugby against the Oni
- Artistic Swimming against Princess Otohime
- Climbing against Fukuro
- Marathon against the Kijimuna
Google’s official character guide confirms these seven champions and connects each one with a different sport and challenge. See Google’s Champion Island character and sports guide
Champion Island Side Quests And Progression
Winning all seven sports is only the main path. The island also contains side quests where Lucky helps different characters, finds missing items, solves small problems, and visits areas that are easy to miss.
Google later expanded the Doodle with additional side quests and bonus levels. Its August 2021 update specifically told returning players to look for new challenges after collecting the scrolls. Read Google’s Champion Island bonus-content update
One useful approach is finishing nearby side quests while travelling between championships instead of leaving everything until the end.
Champion Island Teams
Early in the adventure, Lucky can join one of four teams.
During the original event, player scores contributed to a global team leaderboard. That shared scoring system made the Doodle feel larger than a normal single-player browser game, even though you still controlled Lucky individually.
Google now describes Champion Island as its largest multiplayer Doodle, noting that people around the world competed through the team system. See Google’s history of interactive Doodles
Who Created Champion Island?
Champion Island was created by the Google Doodle Team in partnership with Tokyo-based animation studio STUDIO 4°C.
The animation partnership is important because Champion Island has a much stronger story and character style than many older Google Doodles. Short animated scenes introduce Lucky, the champions, and different parts of the island.
Connection With The Olympics
Champion Island launched during the Tokyo 2020 Olympic period, which took place in 2021 after being postponed.
Its sports selection also reflects the event. Skateboarding and sport climbing were among the sports added to the Tokyo 2020 Olympic programme. Official Olympic material confirms that both were part of the programme alongside established sports such as table tennis, rugby sevens, artistic swimming, archery, and athletics. Games Like Champion Island
Players who enjoy Champion Island may prefer games that combine several short challenges with a world that can be freely explored.
The main difference from a normal sports collection is the adventure structure. You are not simply choosing events from a menu. Lucky physically travels between arenas, meets characters, and completes quests along the way.
That makes Champion Island a better fit for players who enjoy both mini-games and light exploration.
About This Game
Champion Island is easy to start but surprisingly large for a Google Doodle.
The seven championships provide the main goals, but the island becomes more interesting when you stop treating every location as a shortcut to the next sport. Small conversations and optional tasks give the world much more personality.
Another common mistake is assuming every mini-game uses the same type of timing. Table tennis rewards quick reactions, while archery values accuracy and climbing requires careful movement around obstacles.

More Google Doodle Games
Google has created many interactive games, but Champion Island is one of its largest projects.
Unlike shorter Doodles built around a single mechanic, Champion Island combines seven sports, an explorable map, character stories, teams, side quests, hidden challenges, and animated sequences.
Google’s September 5, 2021 closing page marked the end of the original Champion Island event after players around the world had taken part throughout the summer.
