About Popcorn
Google released Celebrating Popcorn on September 25, 2024. The Doodle marked the anniversary of a world-record popcorn machine built in Thailand and turned the celebration into an interactive survival game. Google’s official Popcorn Doodle page also preserves the game and its development artwork.

Popcorn Gameplay
You enter an arena as a popcorn kernel and move around to avoid attacks that can eventually pop your character.
The biggest mistake is standing still after avoiding one hazard. New attacks can arrive from another direction quickly, so keeping some open space around your character usually gives you more time to react.
Controls
On desktop:
- Arrow Keys: Move
- Spacebar: Use your special ability
Touchscreen versions use an on-screen movement control and ability button.
The controls are simple, so most of the challenge comes from positioning and knowing when to use your special power.
Popcorn Characters And Abilities
Players can choose between three kernel types, each built around a different ability.
The available abilities focus on healing, shielding, or catching and throwing attacks back. This makes character choice more meaningful than simply selecting a different appearance.
A defensive character can be easier when learning the hazards, while other abilities may suit players who are comfortable moving through crowded areas.
Popcorn Hazards And Challenges
The arena introduces popcorn-themed dangers such as butter, fire and microwave-style attacks.
These hazards do not always behave the same way, so surviving requires more than running continuously in one direction. Watching the attack pattern before moving often works better than reacting at the last second.
Google’s behind-the-scenes material shows that the team tested several phases and visual ideas for the butter, fire and microwave attacks while developing the game. See the official Google Doodle development material.
Popcorn Game Modes And Progression
Popcorn includes Solo and Squad play.
Solo mode puts the focus on individual survival, while Squad mode allows friends to play together. There is no traditional campaign with equipment upgrades or long character progression. The main measure of improvement is how long you survive and how well you handle increasingly crowded attacks.
A useful habit is saving your special ability for a dangerous situation instead of activating it as soon as it becomes available.
Who Created Popcorn?
Popcorn was created by the Google Doodle Team.
Google credits Kevin Laughlin and Matt Cruickshank for art, Anthony Irwin for UX and design, and Brian Murray, Stephanie Gu, Jacob Howcroft and Mark Ivey for engineering, along with a wider production and sound team.
Why Was The Popcorn Game Created?
The Doodle was connected to a popcorn-related world record. Guinness World Records confirms that Carnival Magic Theme Park in Phuket, Thailand, created a popcorn machine measuring 7.89 metres tall on September 26, 2020. See the Guinness World Records entry.
Games Like Popcorn
Players who enjoy Popcorn may also like survival, dodge and arena games where movement matters more than complicated controls.
The important difference is the character ability system. Some simple avoidance games give every player identical tools, while Popcorn lets you choose a kernel with a specific defensive or reactive skill.
That small choice can noticeably change how you approach each round.
About This Game
Popcorn works well as a short browser game because the objective is immediately clear: stay unpopped.
After several rounds, however, movement becomes more deliberate. Running toward an empty part of the arena can sometimes place you directly in the path of the next attack, so watching what is happening around the whole screen is more useful than focusing only on your character.
The food theme also has a much longer history than the Doodle itself. Smithsonian research discusses archaeological evidence showing that people in ancient Peru were preparing forms of popcorn thousands of years ago. Read Smithsonian’s history of ancient popcorn.

Popcorn fits naturally into:

- Google Doodle Games
- Dodge Games
Its strongest identity is survival arcade gameplay because every round revolves around movement, hazards and staying active longer than the competition.
More Google Doodle Games
Google has created many playable Doodles based on sports, history, culture, music and special events.
Popcorn stands out because Google described it as the Doodle allowing the highest number of players to compete in one match at the same time when it launched.
The Doodle also connects its playful theme to the long relationship between popcorn and entertainment. Smithsonian notes that popcorn became closely tied to movie theaters during the Great Depression, even though theaters had previously resisted selling it.
