Petanque is an interactive Google Doodle game based on the traditional French boules sport. Players take turns throwing metal boules toward a small target ball and try to finish closer than their opponent. The rules are easy to understand, but judging direction, power, and whether to place a boule safely or knock an opponent away gives each round more strategy. Google released the Doodle on July 31, 2022.

About Petanque

The game turns the outdoor sport into a short browser challenge. Each player throws boules toward the small target, commonly called the jack or cochonnet, and the closest placements determine the score.

Google created the Doodle to celebrate a game that developed in Provence, France, in the early 20th century. Google’s official Pétanque Doodle explains both the game’s history and its basic rules.

Petanque Gameplay

Aim your boule toward the target and choose enough power to place it closer than your opponent’s best throw.

A common mistake is always aiming directly at the cochonnet. Sometimes leaving a boule slightly short creates a useful obstacle, while a stronger throw can be used to knock an opponent’s well-positioned boule away.

Controls

Use the mouse or touchscreen to aim and control your throw.

The controls stay simple throughout the game. Most of the challenge comes from judging distance and deciding whether a gentle placement or a stronger shot makes more sense.

Petanque Boules And Scoring

Only one side scores at the end of each round. Points are awarded for each boule that sits closer to the target than the opposing team’s nearest boule.

The first player or team to reach 13 points wins. The current international rules published by the governing federation confirm the standard 13-point format. Read the official FIPJP Pétanque rules

This makes accuracy more important than simply throwing every boule as close as possible on the first attempt.

Petanque Strategy And Progression

Pétanque does not use character upgrades or a traditional level system. Progress comes from improving your throws and making better choices during each round.

Two basic approaches are important. Pointing means placing a boule close to the target, while shooting means trying to remove an opponent’s boule.

A useful habit is checking the current closest boule before every throw. Throwing hard when you already hold the best position can create unnecessary risk.

Who Created Petanque?

The interactive game was created by the Google Doodle Team.

Google credits Helene Leroux for art, Anthony Irwin for UX design, Jacob Howcroft as engineering lead, and several other artists, engineers, producers, and sound specialists.

History Of The Sport

Google dates the modern form of Pétanque to 1907 in Provence, France, when the rules of an older boules game were adjusted so a player could throw while remaining stationary.

The French Pétanque federation continues to organize national competition and describes itself as the body responsible for developing Pétanque and Jeu Provençal across France. French Pétanque Federation competition site

Games Like Pétanque

Players who enjoy Pétanque may also like bocce, bowling, curling-style games, mini golf, and other accuracy games where position matters more than fast reactions.

The interesting difference is that your opponent’s boules remain part of the playing area. A good throw can therefore score for you, block another route, or remove an opponent’s advantage.

About This Game

Pétanque becomes more interesting once you stop treating every throw as a simple attempt to land beside the target.

If your opponent already has an excellent boule near the cochonnet, another careful placement may not be enough. A stronger shooting attempt can completely change the round.

That mix of accuracy and tactical choice is also central to the real sport. France’s public health activity guide describes Pétanque as a game where players alternate throws and score according to which boules finish closest to the target. See the French public health guide to Pétanque

Google has created many interactive Doodles around sports, history, holidays, and cultural traditions.

Petanque stands out because the digital version keeps the real sport’s central decision intact: place your boule closer or risk a shot that moves your opponent away. The international federation also confirmed that no rule changes were adopted for 2026, so the familiar competitive framework remains current.
