About Mortal Kombat X Mobile

NetherRealm's 3v3 phone fighter, renamed Mortal Kombat in 2019 and still updated on Google Play

Launched as a free companion to NetherRealm’s 2015 console fighter, this game has outlived the console release it was built to promote. Warner Bros. announced it on March 2, 2015 as a fighting and card-battler hybrid, released it on iOS on April 7, soft-launched it on Android in selected Asian countries on April 21 and opened it worldwide on May 4, 2015.

Mortal Kombat X Mobile Became Plain Mortal Kombat In 2019

Anyone looking for the original name on Google Play will not find it, because the app changed its title. With the 2.0 update in February 2019, released ahead of Mortal Kombat 11, the game was renamed, picked up features from the new console entry and moved from Unreal Engine 3 to Unreal Engine 4. The current Mortal Kombat app on Google Play, package com.wb.goog.mkx, is the same game that launched as Mortal Kombat X Mobile, with your progress carried over.

How A Mortal Kombat Mobile Fight Plays

Like Injustice before it, the game uses three-on-three teams. Taps throw strikes, swipes chain combos and a held input blocks, while landing hits fills a power meter for special attacks and the big X-ray style moves. Tagging out lets a hurt fighter rest, and characters from the same version of the series, such as MKX or MK11 cards, often boost each other with passive bonuses when they share a team. Friendship and Brutality finishers are tied to specific gear, so they are earned rather than input by a button sequence.

Towers, Faction Wars And The Krypt

Single-player content centres on Tower events, ladders of fights capped with bosses, and each tower also has a Fatal version with much harder opponents. The Krypt is an exploration map where you spend in-game currency to open graves and find rewards. Faction Wars is the competitive side, an online mode in which you attack and defend against other players’ teams for seasonal leaderboard prizes. Weekly team challenges reward you with specific characters, and a Kombat Pass runs in seasons on top of all that.

Guest Fighters And Updates Over The Years

NetherRealm kept the roster growing long after launch, and the current listing claims more than 150 characters. A few milestones from the Mortal Kombat X era stand out:

  • Freddy Krueger as a mobile exclusive in version 1.11, December 2016
  • Jade and Baraka as mobile exclusives in version 1.13
  • Takeda and Tremor in version 1.14, September 2017, with Goro and Shao Kahn in an October update
  • Bo’ Rai Cho and Kintaro in February 2018
  • Leatherface in October 2018

After the rename, characters from Mortal Kombat 11 such as Noob Saibot joined, along with the newer gear and progression systems.

What Players Think Of Mortal Kombat Mobile Today

The game has passed 100 million downloads on Google Play and holds about 4 stars from millions of ratings, with the most recent update dated July 2026. Critics were cooler in 2015, when the iOS version scored 66 on Metacritic, mostly because of the card grind. Players today tend to praise the roster, the animation and the amount of free content, whereas the usual complaints concern how long top-tier characters take to upgrade and how often the store pushes random-item packs. It carries a Mature 17+ rating for blood and intense violence.

Advice For A Fresh Start In 2026

Focus on building one team from a single series version first, since matching passives make a bigger difference early than raw card rarity. Play the regular Tower before attempting its Fatal version, and save Krypt currency for the areas that contain gear you need. Because the app has grown large over the years, give it plenty of free storage and a stable connection on first launch.
