About Dead Space Mobile

EA's original Dead Space chapter for phones, telling the outbreak on the Sprawl before Dead Space 2

Electronic Arts brought Dead Space to phones in 2011 as a full original chapter of the series rather than a cut-down spin-off. Australian studio IronMonkey Studios built it with help from Visceral Games, the team behind the console games. The iPhone version came first in January 2011, then Sony Ericsson’s Xperia Play and the BlackBerry PlayBook got ports, and the wider Android release followed in December 2011 at about $7.

What Is Dead Space Mobile

This is a third-person survival horror game set in 2510 on the Sprawl, a city-sized station built into the remains of Saturn’s moon Titan. The story takes place directly before Dead Space 2, which made it more than a side story for fans. You play as Vandal, a new convert to Unitology who is guided over a headset to sabotage power boxes across the station. Those acts release the Necromorph outbreak that Isaac Clarke later walks into, and characters such as station director Hans Tiedemann and Unitology leader Daina Le Guin tie the plot directly to the console sequel.

How Dead Space Mobile Plays On A Touchscreen

Combat keeps the series’ rule of cutting limbs rather than aiming for the head. Weapons are engineering tools first and guns second:

  • Plasma Saw for close-range defense
  • Plasma Cutter, the first long-range tool
  • Line Gun and Ripper, found later in the campaign
  • A fifth weapon added in a May 2011 update

Movement and aiming use touch controls designed for the phone, and this was the most common complaint in reviews. Critics agreed the atmosphere and sound design were close to console quality, though aiming precisely under pressure took practice. The game is best approached slowly, clearing rooms carefully and aiming for limbs, because rushing on touch controls is how most deaths happen.

Updates, Survival Mode And Awards

EA kept supporting it for a while. The May 2011 update added a new weapon, chapter select, a timed survival mode built from story locations and a new difficulty level, and a later Android update added proper support for the Nexus 7 tablet. The iOS version scored 88 on Metacritic, with 8.5 from IGN and 5 out of 5 from TouchArcade. It won Best Mobile Game of 2011 at the Meffy Awards, was Apple’s iPad Game of the Year for 2011 and was nominated for Mobile Game of the Year at the Interactive Achievement Awards.

EA Pulled Dead Space Mobile From Google Play Around 2015

In September and October 2015, EA removed a batch of older mobile games from the App Store and said it would not support or update them going forward. Dead Space was one of five of those games also pulled from Google Play, and records place the Android takedown between late 2015 and early 2016. In its final period the Play listing carried EA’s zzSunset prefix, a label the publisher used for apps being retired. Dead Space Mobile is no longer sold on Google Play, and EA has not released a replacement for phones. The series continues on PC and consoles, most recently with the 2023 Dead Space remake.

Does It Still Run On Modern Android Phones?

Usually not without trouble. The game was built for Android 2.3 and 4.x hardware with 32-bit libraries and a large separate data download, and those downloads came from EA servers that are no longer maintained. Current 64-bit-only phones are a poor fit for builds of that age.

Why Fans Still Talk About It

Many players who own Dead Space 2 never realized its opening events were set up in a phone game. The story of Vandal fills a real gap in the series timeline, and people who played it on phones like the Xperia Play often remember it as one of the first Android games that genuinely felt like a console release.
