About The Simpsons: Tapped Out

Rebuild Springfield after Homer's meltdown in EA's long-running city builder, closed in January 2025.

Homer causes a nuclear meltdown at the start of this game because he was too busy playing on his tablet, and Springfield is wiped out. Rebuilding the town, one building and one character at a time, became one of EA Mobile’s longest-running games. The Simpsons: Tapped Out launched on iOS in March 2012 and arrived on Android on February 6, 2013, free with in-app purchases. The first iOS release in 2012 was briefly pulled because of server problems before EA brought it back later that year.

What Is The Simpsons: Tapped Out

You start with Homer and a patch of empty land. Placing buildings such as the Kwik-E-Mart or Moe’s Tavern earns money over time, and quests send characters off on timed jobs that unlock new people, story scenes and more buildings. Characters do tasks that match their personalities in the show, and each job shows a short animation in your town while the timer runs. Experience raises your level, and after a May 2016 update the cap went all the way to 939.

Show Writers Gave Tapped Out Its Jokes

What set Tapped Out apart from other licensed city builders was that real Simpsons writers worked on it. Around ten writers contributed without screen credit, including Matt Selman, J. Stewart Burns, Brian Kelley, Jeff Westbrook, Jon Kern, Carolyn Omine and Diana Wright. Burns later called it a labor of love. The dialogue that pops up during quests reads like lines from the series, and many players stayed for years mainly because the jokes kept coming.

Events, Donuts And The Money Side

EA ran events almost nonstop: Halloween Treehouse of Horror updates, Christmas, Valentine’s Day, and events tied to new episodes. Each used a temporary currency that bought limited prizes. Donuts were the premium currency, earned slowly through levels and quests or bought with real money, and they paid for special characters and premium buildings. EA estimated the game had made more than $130 million by 2014. Critics gave it a Metacritic score of 69, praising its content and humor while criticizing how aggressively it sold donuts.

What Players Did To Get Ahead

Long-time players shared a few habits that made the game easier without paying:

  • Setting long jobs, such as 12- or 24-hour tasks, before bed
  • Visiting friends’ Springfields daily for extra money and event currency
  • Saving donuts for event characters that never came back
  • Using decorations to raise the bonus percentage on earnings

Communities on Reddit and fan wikis tracked every event and prize, and the most dedicated players kept towns going for over a decade.

EA Shut Down The Simpsons: Tapped Out In 2025

EA announced on September 26, 2024 that the game would close after 12 years. It was removed from the App Store and Google Play on October 31, 2024, real-money purchases ended at the same time, and the servers went offline for good on January 24, 2025. Because the official app needed EA’s servers, it no longer works at all. The closure was part of a broader pullback by EA from older mobile games, and EA did not release an offline version.

Who Misses Tapped Out The Most

Players who loved The Simpsons and liked checking in a few times a day got the most out of it, especially those who built up years of event items. For anyone curious now, there is no official way to start a new Springfield, since EA has not released a replacement Simpsons game on Android.
