Pigs became the heroes in Bad Piggies, a Rovio spin-off released on September 27, 2012, for Android, iOS and Mac at once. Instead of knocking down structures with a slingshot, you build machines to carry a pig safely across each level, which made it one of the most different games Rovio ever attached to the Angry Birds name.

Why Ross The Pig Needs A Vehicle In Bad Piggies

The story follows Ross, a freckled pig who accidentally shreds the map King Pig was using to find the birds’ eggs. King Pig sends him across the island to collect every piece, and each level holds one part of that search. The Mechanic Pig appears too, and the whole hunt turns out to be a prank, as the eggs the pigs keep spotting were painted onto their telescope by the birds.

How Building Works In Bad Piggies

Each level starts with a small grid and a limited set of parts. You drag crates, wheels, balloons, coil springs, fans, engines and TNT into the grid, place the pig in a box, and press play. Some parts can be triggered once the vehicle is moving, so you can switch a fan on, pop a balloon or detonate TNT at the right moment. If the vehicle falls apart or gets stuck, you go back to the builder and try again.

Every level has three star goals. The first is simply reaching the finish, and the others might ask you to finish under a time limit, collect a crate on the way, or win without using a particular part. Building a simple vehicle that finishes first, then changing it for the harder stars, saves a lot of time. When a level beats you completely, the Hire a Mechanic button has the Mechanic Pig build a working vehicle for you.

Episodes And Updates Rovio Added To Bad Piggies

Ground Hog Day and When Pigs Fly were among the early episodes, and later ones brought new ideas. Rise and Swine added grappling hooks and vehicles that crawl along walls, Tusk ’til Dawn was a Halloween episode, and The Road to El Porkado followed. The Road Hogs update on February 27, 2013, added six time trial levels and 30 Flight in the Night levels in which sleeping birds attack if you disturb them. In February 2015 a gearbox part arrived, letting vehicles drive in reverse, together with a new sandbox level.

Sandbox levels give you open space and a large pile of parts with no goal beyond experimenting. Hidden skulls unlock an extra sandbox, and a paid sandbox called Field of Dreams came with the first update.

Critics Praised Bad Piggies For Breaking From Angry Birds

The iOS version scored 83 on Metacritic, IGN gave it 9.2, and Pocket Gamer awarded it a Silver Award. Reviewers liked that it played nothing like Angry Birds, though many warned that the difficulty climbed steeply. The game passed 100 million downloads by February 2015.

Bad Piggies Is Still Live On Google Play

Unlike most of the older Angry Birds games, Bad Piggies never left Google Play. It is free to install from Rovio Entertainment Oy, with ads and in-app purchases, and its most recent update came in October 2025. The listing describes more than 200 levels, over 40 special levels unlocked with three stars, and more than nine sandbox levels. Player reviews praise the building and the music, and they complain about frequent ads, cosmetic loot boxes and occasional bugs. A sequel, Bad Piggies 2, was soft launched on iOS in a few European countries in 2023, with an Android release planned later.
