About Real Steel

The original 2011 Real Steel movie game: one-on-one robot boxing with eight robots and a Midas final

Indian studio Jump Games made the official mobile game for DreamWorks’ Real Steel, the 2011 robot boxing film starring Hugh Jackman. It reached the App Store in September 2011 at $4.99, and the Android version followed, with a Real Steel HD edition landing on the Android Market in January 2012 for about a dollar. The Android game used the package listed here, and later versions passed six million downloads.

What Is Real Steel

This is a one-on-one robot boxing game built straight from the film. You pick a robot, step into the ring and punch until one machine falls apart. The rules are boxing with dirty tricks allowed, so knee strikes and low blows sit alongside jabs and hooks. Robots from the movie fill the roster, with the giant gold champion Midas waiting at the end of the tournament.

How A Real Steel Fight Plays

Controls use a virtual pad plus buttons for left punch, right punch, block and special. Four left punches chain into a jab combo, and pressing Punch with Special triggers a special move, though only after your first punch has landed, a rule the game never clearly explained and one that confused many early players. Attacks drain a power bar that refills while you block. Blocking is the hidden key to winning, since it is the only way to recover power for the next flurry. Hits score between 150 and 400 points, with bonuses for remaining health, perfect rounds and knocking an opponent’s head clean off.

Modes And Robots In Real Steel

The content is modest but focused:

  • Tournament: fight seven robots in a row with rising difficulty, ending with Midas
  • Free Sparring: pick both robots, one of four arenas and a difficulty
  • Practice: a passive dummy for learning combos

You start with four robots, and beating the tournament unlocks four more, for eight in total, along with a Hard difficulty. Opponents include Aquabot, Six Shooter, Noisy Boy and Metro. Winning rounds earns tokens to boost armor, power or speed, but those boosts reset when you leave a tournament. Updates added more fighters, and version 1.4.5 brought a robot called Tackle.

What Reviewers And Players Said

TouchArcade gave the iOS release 3.5 out of 5, liking the robot animations while criticizing lifeless backgrounds, the thin upgrade system and controls that felt unresponsive until players understood the contact rule. The general view was that it was a reasonable movie tie-in that did not compete with full boxing games, yet it was the only official way to play as the film’s robots on a phone.

Is Real Steel Still On Google Play?

The Jump Games version of Real Steel is no longer listed on Google Play. The series did continue on mobile through Reliance Games, which released Real Steel World Robot Boxing in October 2013, a deeper game with more robots and customization that passed five million downloads within days. Players who want robot boxing from this film today will find it in that later series rather than in the 2011 original.

Who It Suits

Fans of the movie who want short, simple fights will get the most from it. Its compact tournament takes little time to finish, so it works best as a quick nostalgia trip rather than a long-term fighting game. On iOS it also carried six Game Center leaderboards and 24 achievements, which gave score chasers a reason to replay the tournament on Hard after beating Midas once.
