Hipster Whale had a surprise hit with Crossy Road in late 2014, and within a year and a half the small Australian studio had turned it into a Disney game. Disney Crossy Road launched on April 7, 2016 for iOS, Android, Windows and Amazon devices, free with optional purchases. It used the same endless hopping idea but swapped the chicken for Mickey Mouse and hundreds of other blocky Disney and Pixar characters.

What Is Disney Crossy Road

You tap to hop forward, swipe to step sideways or back, and try to get as far as possible without getting hit, drowning or falling behind the scrolling screen. Each hop forward scores a point. Coins appear along the way and can also be earned from daily gifts and missions, and you spend them in a prize machine to win new characters. The art is pixel-cube style, and every world plays an 8-bit take on music from its film. Characters move in single hops on a grid, so the whole skill lies in timing gaps in traffic and stepping onto logs and platforms at the right moment.

The 23 Worlds Of Disney Crossy Road

Worlds are more than skins, since each one swaps in its own obstacles, scenery and music from the film. By the final update the game held 23 worlds:

Characters, Missions And Legendary Bonuses

The roster grew from more than 100 at launch to over 700 by the end, sorted into Classic, Rare, Epic, Legendary, Enchanted and Diamond groups. Daily missions and weekend challenges kept players coming back, and Legendary characters such as Hamm from Toy Story and Genie from Aladdin gave permanent bonuses once unlocked. Players enjoyed hunting secret characters that only appeared after specific actions in a world, a habit carried over from the original Crossy Road.

Disney Crossy Road Shut Down In March 2020

Disney Crossy Road was shut down on March 12, 2020 on iOS, Google Play and Amazon, and its store listings were removed. The DuckTales update, version 3.2, was the last one. Neither Disney nor Hipster Whale gave a detailed public reason. The game did not stop working on devices where it was already installed. Instead, classic, rare and epic characters were unlocked for everyone, while purchases stopped working and can freeze the game if you try one. Anything rarer than epic is no longer obtainable.

How It Compares With The Original Crossy Road

Hipster Whale’s original Crossy Road is still live and free on Google Play, and it keeps getting updates. It plays the same way, so new players can get the core experience there. What you lose without the Disney version is the movie worlds, which made each run feel different depending on which character you picked.
