Halloween 2010 is where Angry Birds Seasons began, though it was not called that at first. Rovio put a separate paid game named Angry Birds Halloween on iOS that October, with one spooky episode called Trick or Treat, then renamed it Angry Birds Seasons on December 1, 2010, and brought it to Android as a free ad-supported game.

What Is Angry Birds Seasons

The idea was simple. Instead of one big set of levels, Rovio would release a short new episode around each holiday, with its own music, scenery and often its own twist on the physics. The slingshot and the birds were the same as in the original game, so anyone who had played it could jump straight in, but the backdrops changed from pumpkins to snow to beach parties as the year went on.

Six Years Of Angry Birds Seasons Holiday Episodes

Season’s Greedings came first after Halloween, with 25 levels that unlocked one a day like an advent calendar. 2011 was the busiest year, with Hogs and Kisses for Valentine’s Day, Go Green, Get Lucky for St. Patrick’s Day, Easter Eggs, Summer Pignic, Moon Festival, Ham’o’ween and Wreck the Halls. The pace slowed after that, but new episodes kept coming until Ragnahog in December 2016, the last of 29.

Several episodes stand out because they added a real mechanic:

• Piglantis in 2012 brought fluid physics, so towers sat in water
• Haunted Hogs added ghost blocks for Halloween 2012
• Winter Wonderham made surfaces slippery with ice
• Abra-Ca-Bacon in 2013 used magic portals that moved birds across the level
• Ham Dunk in 2014 had an NBA theme with basketball hoops

On Finn Ice in December 2014 introduced Tony, a blue bird who is Terence’s cousin and slams straight down when you tap the screen.

Angry Birds Seasons Changed A Lot In 2015

Late in its life the game moved toward a free-to-play model. In October 2015 Rovio added Birdcoins, a currency earned by finishing levels or bought with real money, and placed older episodes behind it. Daily Quests and Birdwear costumes arrived the same year, with costumes unlocked through a scavenger hunt. Long-time players were split, as content they had played for free now sat behind a currency. Critics had already noted that Seasons was harder than the original, and the iOS HD version held a Metacritic score of 78.

How Seasons Differed From The Other Angry Birds Games

Rio told a film story, Space added gravity, and Star Wars added character powers, whereas Seasons kept the original rules and changed the setting with the calendar. That made it the entry people returned to throughout the year, as a new episode around Christmas or Easter gave them a reason to open the app again. It also came to consoles as part of Angry Birds Trilogy, announced at E3 2012.

Is Angry Birds Seasons Still On Google Play?

No. The final update came on December 1, 2016, and Rovio removed the game from Google Play and the App Store. A June 2021 report on Rovio’s plans dated the removal to December 2018 and named Seasons alongside the original game as titles it hoped to bring back, after largely rebuilding them for current platforms. Rovio did remake the original as Rovio Classics: Angry Birds in 2022, but no Seasons remake has followed, so there is no official way to install it on Android now.

Old installs from that era may still exist on some devices, but the game’s final build dates from 2016 and its currency features depended on services that no longer run, so it should be treated as gone. Angry Birds 2, which still holds seasonal events, is the closest live Rovio game.
