About Angry Birds Classic
The original 2009 slingshot game, from Poached Eggs to Golden Eggs, now gone from Google Play
Rovio Entertainment, a studio in Espoo, Finland, put the first Angry Birds on the iPhone on December 11, 2009, after a short soft launch in Finland. Chillingo handled publishing, Jaakko Iisalo designed the birds and the levels, and within a few months the game sat at the top of the UK and then the US paid charts.
What Is Angry Birds Classic
Angry Birds Classic is the name the original game carried on stores in its later years, so that it would not be confused with the many spin-offs. You load a bird into a slingshot, pull back, and release it at towers of wood, glass and stone that shelter green pigs who stole the flock’s eggs. A level ends when every pig is gone or when you run out of birds, and you earn one to three stars depending on your score.
Each bird has a job. The red one simply hits hard, the small blue one splits into three when you tap the screen, the yellow one speeds forward in a straight line, the black one explodes, and the white one drops an egg bomb before shooting upward. Learning which bird breaks which material is most of the skill.
A Finnish Studio Took Angry Birds Classic From iPhone To Android
Android players first saw a beta on the Android Market in September 2010. The full version arrived in October 2010, first through GetJar and then on the Android Market a few days later, and Rovio chose to give it away with ads instead of charging for it. That decision paid off, as Rovio reported earning roughly one million US dollars a month from Android advertising at its peak. Downloads across platforms reached 50 million by December 2010, and the iOS version spent a record 275 days at number one on the App Store paid chart.
How Episodes Grew Inside Angry Birds Classic
The game launched with Poached Eggs, and Rovio kept adding free episodes for years afterward. Among them were:
- Mighty Hoax and Danger Above in early 2010
- The Big Setup in July 2010
- Ham ‘Em High in December 2010
- Mine and Dine in June 2011
- Birdday Party, Surf and Turf and a Bad Piggies episode later on
Golden Eggs, added in April 2010, hid collectibles across the menus and levels, each one unlocking a bonus stage. The Mighty Eagle, which could wipe out every pig on a level once per hour, later became an in-app purchase on the free version.
Why Angry Birds Classic Left Google Play Twice
In July 2019 Rovio removed the original game, along with several other older titles, from Google Play and the App Store without much warning. In an open letter in June 2021, the company said the old games had been pulled because their technology no longer met its standards, and it promised to bring the classic experience back once it could largely rebuild it.
That rebuild became Rovio Classics: Angry Birds, released on March 31, 2022. It moved the game from its old engine to Unity while keeping Box2D physics, sold for $0.99 with no ads or in-app purchases, and made the Mighty Eagle free. It covered the familiar episodes from Poached Eggs to Surf and Turf plus Golden Eggs, though the Mighty League did not return. Less than a year later, on February 23, 2023, Rovio delisted the remake from Google Play, saying it was hurting the rest of its games portfolio. On iOS the same app stayed up under a new name, Red’s First Flight.
Can You Still Play Angry Birds Classic On Android Today?
Neither the original nor the remake can be bought on Google Play today. Players who installed Rovio Classics before February 2023 could keep it on their devices, though new installs stopped. The old ad-supported build dates from the early Android years, so even an existing copy may refuse to run on recent phones that only accept 64-bit apps.
Rovio’s live alternative is Angry Birds 2, which is free with in-app purchases and keeps the slingshot core while adding card-based bird selection, multi-stage levels and lives. Players who want the original pacing usually find that the remake, if they own it, plays closest to the 2009 game, since Rovio said it matched the original’s physics and look.
Anyone coming back after years away will notice how much depends on the first shot. Hitting a tower low, near its supports, often brings more down than a direct strike on a pig, and the blue bird works best against glass, while the yellow one cuts through wood. Those habits carried over into every later entry in the series.
