About N.O.V.A. Legacy

Gameloft's free, lightweight 2017 remake of the first N.O.V.A. shooter, later removed from Google Play

Five years on from N.O.V.A. 3, Gameloft’s Madrid studio went back to where the series began and released N.O.V.A. Legacy, a remake of the 2009 original, on Google Play in April 2017. The App Store version followed in 2018. Unlike the paid earlier games, it was free to play, and its download was tiny for a 3D shooter.

N.O.V.A. Legacy Rebuilt The 2009 Original

The first N.O.V.A. came out on iOS in December 2009 with twelve levels, eight weapons and a story of about four hours, following the soldier Kal Wardin against an alien threat. Legacy kept that story and setting but updated the graphics and sound, then restructured it for short sessions. The campaign was split into 19 levels, each shorter than the originals, so a mission could be finished in a few minutes on a bus or in a queue.

Gameloft advertised the download as about 20 MB, and reviewers measured it closer to 25 MB, which was unusually small for the genre. That light footprint meant N.O.V.A. Legacy ran on many budget phones that could not handle N.O.V.A. 3.

How A Mission Plays In N.O.V.A. Legacy

Controls follow the familiar Gameloft layout, with a virtual stick for movement on the left and drag-to-aim on the right, plus buttons for firing and abilities. Missions push you through corridors and open areas against alien troops, and a power meter charges as you fight so you can trigger a special ability at the right time. The gunplay drew on Gameloft’s Modern Combat series, which shows in the way cover, reloading and aim assist feel.

Weapon Crafting And Six-Player Deathmatch

The biggest change from the original was progression. Weapons could be crafted and upgraded with resources earned in missions, so later levels expected stronger gear. This kept players coming back, though it also meant that stalling on a hard mission usually pointed to grinding earlier levels or buying upgrades.

Multiplayer offered real-time deathmatch for up to six players. Matches were short and suited the mobile focus of the game, but the mode was simpler than the seven-mode lineup N.O.V.A. 3 had offered, and longtime fans noticed the difference.

What Happened To N.O.V.A. Legacy On Google Play

Around the end of January 2023, Android players noticed that N.O.V.A. Legacy had disappeared from Google Play. A Reddit user first pointed it out, and a Droid Gamers report from January 30, 2023, said Gameloft had made no statement explaining the removal. The game was still available on iOS at that point. Since the earlier N.O.V.A. games had already been pulled from Google Play after Legacy launched, its removal left Android without any official N.O.V.A. game.

There is no current Google Play listing, and Gameloft has not released a replacement in the series. Old installs may still open on some phones, but online features depend on Gameloft’s servers, and there is no guarantee they still work.

Who Got The Most Out Of N.O.V.A. Legacy

Players with older or low-storage phones were the main audience, since the small download and short missions fitted devices that could not run heavier shooters. Fans of the original series appreciated seeing the first story again with better visuals, although many felt the upgrade grind and simplified multiplayer made it lighter than N.O.V.A. 3. For newcomers it served as an easy introduction to Gameloft’s sci-fi shooters, with no upfront price.
